Sit Less, Move More: Is a Height-Adjustable Desk Right for You?

Meta description: Considering sit-stand desks for your office? Learn how height-adjustable desks work, how to use them properly and which features matter most.

For many office workers, the day is one long sit: in traffic on the way in, at a desk all day, in back-to-back meetings, then on the sofa at home. Height-adjustable desks, often called sit-stand desks, are one of the simplest ways to break that pattern. At the press of a button, the desktop rises so you can work standing for a while, then lowers again when you’d rather sit.

Why alternate between sitting and standing?

Long, unbroken stretches of sitting are widely linked to back and neck discomfort and that familiar mid-afternoon slump. Changing position regularly keeps your body moving, and many people feel more alert when they can stand for part of the day. The aim isn’t to stand all day, which brings its own aches, but to move between the two.

    How to use one properly

Start with short standing sessions and build up gradually, since your legs and feet need time to adjust. Many people find it comfortable to switch positions every 30 to 60 minutes.

Whether you’re sitting or standing, set the desk so your elbows rest at roughly 90 degrees with your shoulders relaxed. Keep your screen at or just below eye level, about an arm’s length away. Supportive shoes or a cushioned mat underfoot make standing noticeably more comfortable.

    Features worth looking for

Memory presets. Saving your preferred sitting and standing heights puts the right position one button press away, so you’re far more likely to actually use the desk as intended. The FlexiSpot FQ2, an affordable entry point to the range, has a six-button handset that stores four presets.

Height range and load capacity. The desk should go low enough for your shortest user and high enough for your tallest. It should also carry your monitors and equipment with room to spare. The FlexiSpot ET114E-N, for instance, adjusts from 710mm to 1210mm and supports up to 70kg.

Safety. An anti-collision system stops the desk if it meets an obstacle while moving, which protects the desk and anything nearby. The FlexiSpot E9W includes this, along with a built-in drawer, USB charging ports and a display showing the current height.

Cable management. Cables need to move with the desk without tangling or pulling loose, so built-in cable management, like that on the FlexiSpot E2 Pro, is worth having.

    Complete the setup

A standing desk works best with a couple of supporting pieces. Monitor arms such as the FlexiSpot F5 and F7 let you raise, lower and angle your screens so they sit at the right height in either position. For more movement in your day, a compact walking pad like the FlexiSpot WP01 pairs with a standing desk. You can walk slowly while you catch up on emails or listen in on a call.

    Not just for the office

FlexiSpot isn’t limited to the workplace. For the home, we also carry FlexiSpot adjustable beds, power recliners and height-adjustable side tables, all built around the same idea of comfort that adapts to you.
